Whether or not you are an SEO copywriter yourself, you can probably
tell by looking at some of the pages in this website that there are some deliberate strategies
I have used to improve the rankings of this site.
To make it clear to myself what is working and what is not (for now) in the world of search
engines, I have fluffed-up this site using very simple and overt content-driven techniques. In
doing so, I have not followed some
of my own advice to aspiring SEO copywriters, which is to always make the material engaging and
valuable to the user.
I know some of these pages are fairly wooden, and borderline
spammy. I did this on purpose to see the effect, both on the spiders and on my users. Would I
ever do this to a client's efforts?
No. But for this website, which I have used primarily as an online portfolio, I feel like I can
risk my traffic patterns for a while in an effort to learn more about my craft, and how the
search engines work. The results have been pretty enlightening at times, and have allowed me to
be able to better help my existing and future clients with real-world experience.
I truly love being an SEO copywriter. It's all I do, every single day of the week. The
consummate nerd. The main reason I can keep finding work writing SEO-friendly webpages, is that
ultimately, I am adept at improving each client's bottom-line. I may use the keywords to help
bring customers into the site, but I have also learned to use research and careful writing to
lead each visitor to a specific action once they have arrived.
Some things I have learned as an SEO copywriter
In the past 4 years, I have learned many things about how to build and manipulate the power
of SEO-friendly websites. I have been lucky enough to work on some really big projects for
companies that are undisputed leaders in this industry. Probably the most important thing that
I have seen in this arena in the past couple years, is that "sticky" copy is where it's
at...Period. Sure, you can boost your organic rankings by knowing how to target and harness the
power of strong keywords and keyphrases. And yes, if you build it right, they will indeed
come--often in droves. However, unlike some other SEO copywriters and search specialists whose
work I have read, I don't simply pad weak pages with strong search terms to drive people in
bulk to a specific page. Because I know that at the end of the day, traffic without user action
never solves anything.
A hyper-focus on SEO tactics have made many businesses lose sight of the core reason that
they have a website: to offer goods, information or services to their users. 9 out of 10
corporate websites looking for better search rankings are commercial websites looking to
improve sales. Keywords may help to bring customers to a site, but solid copywriting is what
inspires the user to act. Miss this critical component, and online success remains elusive.
As a seasoned SEO copywriter, I am always acutely aware of my intended
ROI on a project. I need to know what we specifically want to accomplish, and what really
spells sucess for each client. I am not alone in this approach--every freelance copywriter
worth his or her salt will do the same. My clients appreciate the fact that I can blend
these sales strategies with search strategies to make every page more powerful.
In the end, even as a proud SEO copywriter, I have come to view increased traffic like an
appetizer, while increased sales are always the main course. My talent is in speaking for my
clients with a voice that resonates with their users. That I am also able to understand and
improve organic search engine rankings while I am selling, informing or servicing the user,
is a bonus I am glad to offer to every project.
